Stagecoach is an internationally recognized brand based out of the UK. The Stagecoach Calgary East school is a local family run business, and we hire staff from the Calgary area who are top quality professionals in the fields of performing arts and education. Our goal is to give children the opportunity to build confidence, make new friendships and learn skills for life. Meet the team
Meet our Principal
Principal – Matt Dewald Matt Dewald is a Calgary-based theatre artist and educator with over 30 years of experience in the performing arts. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Drama and a Bachelor of Education from the University of Calgary. Since 1993, Matt has worked with more than a dozen Calgary theatre companies in roles such as director, actor, improviser, lighting technician, producer and playwright. In the mid-2000s, he founded and served as Artistic Director of an independent theatre company, producing multiple shows and fostering local talent. His passion for theatre is matched by his love of teaching. Matt spent four years as a teacher with the Calgary Separate School District and has taught drama classes at the YMCA. Matt is excited to bring his knowledge, creativity and energy to Stagecoach Canada as the Principal of Stagecoach Calgary East.

Alysse Ernewein
Singing
Alysse, originally from Canmore, Alberta, is an international triple-threat performer based in Calgary. A graduate of Randolph College for the Performing Arts, she has performed globally, including her Off-Broadway debut as Oz in We Will Rock You at Madison Square Garden. Alysse is also a director and choreographer, with credits including Legally Blonde and Twelfth Night. Known for her strong work ethic and vibrant personality, she continuously seeks growth through dance, vocal techniques, and creative collaborations.

Early Stages Assistant
I am a University of Calgary student pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, aiming to become a child psychologist. I enjoy working with children and celebrating their individuality. I have played piano since age eight, finding joy in music as a creative outlet. Additionally, I have experience in theatre, including writing, directing, and acting in plays during high school at Bishop Carroll. I aspire to create a safe space for kids to explore and develop their interests in the arts.

I am completing a concurrent Bachelor of Education and Fine Arts/Drama degree at the University of Calgary, blending my passion for teaching and performing arts. With experience in singing, acting, dancing, and technical theatre, I aim to inspire young performers. My background includes playwriting, directing, and improvisation, highlighted by directing my own show at Bishop Carroll High School. Additionally, I have seven years of flute experience and recently returned to piano. I am dedicated to fostering confidence and creativity in my students.

Dance
Fallon Smyl (she/they) is a freelance storyteller based in Calgary, AB. They hold an MLitt and MFA in Shakespeare & Performance from Mary Baldwin University, and a BA in Political Science and BAC in Musical Theatre from Bowling Green State University. Recently, they directed North American Premieres of A Conspiracy Against Love, Beau Defeated, and A Winters Tale, as well as Virginia Premieres of crawlspaceblog, Seven Unlucky Passengers, and Heartbeat Ophelia. www.fallonsmyl.com

Laura has taught drama for decades, sharing her passion with students of all ages. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Drama Education from the University of Calgary and works as a full-time teacher, fostering creativity and confidence. As a performer, Laura has showcased her improv skills across Canada and Europe, bringing energy and storytelling to the stage. She is committed to helping young performers grow as artists while enjoying the process of drama.

Im a high school student with a passion for music and the preforming arts! Ive been a member of the Youth Singers of Calgary for the last five years and Ive been playing piano for even longer. Im a current member of the high school band and excited to preform in the upcoming drama productions! I look forward to sharing my love of music, drama, and dance with you!
